On Saturday, Dec. 24 at 3:14 a.m., two 9-1-1 calls were received reporting a smoke alarm coming from an apartment in a multi-family residence in the 1100 block of Grant Road.

Fire units were dispatched at 3:15 a.m. and arrived on the scene at 3:18 a.m. Units arrived to find the apartment occupant had used pots of water to extinguish a small appliance fire. Firefighters evacuated the resident while they confirmed there was no fire extension into the building and performed an investigation. After, the affected resident returned to their apartment.

The fire was extinguished with no injuries. The fire cause was determined to be accidental due to an unattended space heater covered in a sheet. The estimated damage to the contents and structure is $5,000. The building was turned over to facilities maintenance for continued repairs to the apartment.
