Latest Traffic Signal Change for Castro Street in Effect Nov. 30

Another downtown traffic signal change coming to portion of Castro Street as part of pilot project

Update (11/23/22) On Wednesday, Nov. 30, the traffic signal on Castro Street at California Street will be turned on to standard operation for vehicles and pedestrians on the three approaches of the intersection.

The 300 block of Castro Street will remain closed to vehicle traffic.

Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to follow the signal indications to cross and to use caution when entering the intersection. 

This latest traffic signal change is part of the Castro Street Crossings Traffic Signal Reactivation Pilot Project. All of the pilot project locations will be evaluated for the appropriate long-term traffic control concerning the Castro Street Pedestrian Mall project

Update (10/25/22): On Tuesday, Nov. 1, the traffic signal on Castro Street at Dana Street will be turned on to standard operation for vehicles crossing Castro Street and pedestrians crossing Dana Street.

Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to follow the signal indications to cross and to use caution when entering the intersection.

Update (10/7/22): On Thursday, Oct. 6, the traffic signal on Castro Street at Villa Street was turned back on to standard operation for vehicles crossing Castro Street and pedestrians crossing the side streets. Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to follow the signal indications to cross.

In the coming weeks, the traffic signals on Castro Street at Dana and California streets will also return to standard operation.

A phased rollout for the traffic signal changes is now underway after a number of motorists and pedestrians were observed failing to follow the changed traffic signal operation for legally crossing the intersection.

Update (10/5/22): On Oct. 6-7, the traffic signals on Castro Street at Villa, Dana and California streets will be turned back on to standard operation for vehicles crossing Castro Street and pedestrians crossing the side streets.

This is all part of the Castro Street Crossings Traffic Signal Reactivation Pilot Project. These locations will be evaluated for the appropriate long-term traffic control as part of the Castro Street Pedestrian Mall project. Staff will monitor the intersections and evaluate the signal operations over the next couple of months.

Operations on the 100-300 blocks on Castro Street will remain unchanged and will remain closed to vehicular traffic.

Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians will all be required to follow the signal indications to cross. Please use caution.
