On Tuesday, April 4 at 7:58 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was received from 2601 Garcia Ave. The reporting party stated a construction crew was excavating when they hit and ruptured a natural gas line.

Mountain View Fire Department units were dispatched at 7:58 a.m. and arrived on the scene at 8:04 a.m. Approximately 67 construction workers were evacuated from the site to a nearby parking lot. The Mountain View Police Department closed traffic in both directions of Bayshore Parkway and the westbound direction of Garcia Avenue while units and equipment were on the scene.

Fire crews deployed a charged water line to protect the scene from the potential ignition of flammable gas. A PG&E crew arrived on the scene and inserted a plug in the broken two-inch plastic distribution line to stop the flow of natural gas. Control of the broken pipe was acquired at 9:15 a.m.

There were no reports of injuries. The construction workers were allowed to return to the job site. Traffic was reopened in the westbound lane of Garcia Avenue and the northbound lane of Bayshore Parkway while PG&E crews continued their work at the site.
