On Thursday, Feb. 25 at 3:09 p.m., Mountain View Communications received a 911 call reporting a gas line break in front of a single family residence in the 100 block of Mansfield Dr.

Units were dispatched at 3:10 p.m. and arrived on scene at 3:14 p.m. to find a 1-inch distribution gas line with an active flow of natural gas coming from a trench dug in the front yard of a residential property. Construction crews were digging by hand with a shovel when the gas line ruptured.

The construction site and the adjacent homes on either side of the residence were immediately evacuated and both directions of Mansfield Drive were blocked to traffic. Fire crews deployed a charged water line to protect the scene from potential ignition of the flammable gas.

A PG&E crew arrived to the scene and installed a clamp on the broken line and the all clear was given at 4:02 p.m. There were no reports of injuries; residents were allowed to return to their homes; construction crews were allowed to return to the site; and the traffic was reopened to both directions of Mansfield Drive.
