Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder

Post Date:07/26/2023 11:34 a.m.
An alert patrol officer and a detailed description from a stabbing victim resulted in the arrest of a man on attempted homicide on July 19.

Just after 1 am, Mountain View dispatchers received a call about a stabbing that had happened outside of Safeway, located on the 600 block of San Antonio Road. Officers immediately responded to the store and found a 34-year-old East Palo Alto man who was suffering from multiple stab wounds. Before he was transported to an area hospital for treatment, the victim gave important details on his attacker.

A short time later, one of our patrol officers spotted a man who matched the description of the suspect at the Castro Street VTA Light Rail station. Our officer was able to detain the man without further incident. The man, identified as 31-year-old San Jose resident William Stewart, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and on suspicion of possession of burglary tools.

The reason for the stabbing, as well as other details, are still being investigated by our detectives.

There are no outstanding suspects. Due to additional follow-up that needed to be conducted in this case, we initially were unable to share details and as soon as we were able, we wanted to make our community aware of this incident.

We also wanted to share that we are pleased to report that as of the time of this release, the victim is recovering at home.

If you have more information about the stabbing or were a witness, please contact Detective Josh Gould josh.gould@mountainview.gov.
