On Saturday, Feb. 10 at 12:48 p.m., a 9-1-1 call was received reporting smoke and flames coming from an apartment in the 100 block of Sierra Vista Avenue. The occupant of the affected unit was evacuated by a neighbor before fire crews arrived on the scene.

City of Mountain View Fire Department units were dispatched at 12:48 p.m. and the first engine company also arrived on the scene at 12:53 p.m. City of Palo Alto units also responded and assisted with fire attack. The first engine on the scene located an active fire coming from a first-floor apartment of a multi-story apartment building. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames with a fire-attack hose line, preventing further spread of the fire into the neighboring residences.

Firefighters performed an extensive overhaul of the affected apartment by cutting open the walls and ceiling to ensure complete extinguishment of the flames. The Mountain View Police Department closed traffic on Sierra Vista Avenue while fire units and equipment were on the scene.

The occupant of the fire unit was evaluated as a patient of smoke inhalation and care was transferred to Santa Clara County Ambulance for further evaluation and transport to the hospital. However, the patient refused further treatment, and hospital transport was canceled. A second patient from a neighboring apartment was evaluated by City of Mountain View paramedics and declined treatment and transport. The fire was extinguished with no injuries to fire crews. Traffic was reopened in both directions of Sierra Vista Avenue.

The resident in the affected unit received a $250 gift card from the California Professional Firefighters Union Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency Program. The building management is coordinating with the American Red Cross to make temporary accommodations for the resident while the apartment is restored.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, however early indications are that it may have been accidental in origin. The estimated damage to the contents and structure is $10,000.
