Carport Fire in the 500 Block of W. Middlefield Road

Firefighters stop a carport fire before flames can spread

Post Date:04/24/2024 12:16 p.m.

On Wednesday, April 24 at 1:50 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was received reporting flames coming from the parking lot of a multi-building, multi-story, 402-unit apartment complex in the 500 block of W. Middlefield Road.

City of Mountain View Fire Department units were dispatched at 1:50 a.m. and the first engine company arrived on the scene at 1:58 a.m. The first engine on the scene arrived to find an active fire coming from a carport near the apartment complex. Two engine companies engaged the flames with 1¾-inch fire-attack hose lines, preventing further spread of the fire into the neighboring homes. Firefighters performed an extensive overhaul of the parking structure to ensure complete extinguishment of the flames.

The fire was extinguished with no injuries. Based on witness statements and firsthand accounts of the fire company crews, the origin of the fire was determined to be a car parked under the carport. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The estimated damage to the car and structure is $200,000.
