Residential Fire in the 2000 Block of San Ramon Avenue

Post Date:01/09/2023

On Monday, Jan. 9 at 1:56 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was received from a fire alarm company reporting a sprinkler activation in a multi-family residence in the 2000 block of San Ramon Avenue.

Fire units were dispatched at 1:56 a.m. and arrived on the scene at 2:05 a.m. Units arrived to find a sprinkler system activated on the second floor of a two-story residence due to an electrical fire. The ensuing heat from the fire rose to a level causing the sprinklers to activate.

Firefighters discontinued the water flow from the sprinklers, confirmed there was no fire extension into the building, and performed an overhaul of the structure. Firefighters began salvage operations to remove water from four affected units that suffered water damage.

The affected resident elected to stay in the unit despite property management offering another apartment in a separate building. Two units below the affected unit suffered minimal water damage and both residents elected to stay in their apartments. A third unit directly below the affected unit sustained moderate flooding. That resident accepted a temporary apartment from property management and stayed the night locally with family nearby.

The fire was extinguished with no injuries. The fire cause was determined to be accidental due to the improper storage of combustibles on top of Christmas lights. The estimated damage to the contents and structure is $120,000. Firefighters replaced the sprinkler head and reactivated the water supply to the sprinkler system before leaving the scene. The building was turned over to facilities maintenance for continued repairs to the apartment.
