On Saturday, Jan. 7 at 6:40 p.m., a 9-1-1 call was received reporting an oven fire in an apartment in a multi-family residence in the 1900 block of West El Camino Real. The occupants of the apartment and the neighboring apartments self-evacuated before firefighters arrived.

Fire units were dispatched at 6:40 p.m. and arrived on the scene at 6:45 p.m. Units arrived to find smoke coming from the bottom of the oven. Firefighters used a water fire extinguisher and a dry chemical fire extinguisher to extinguish a small appliance fire. The Mountain View Police Department closed the two right lanes of traffic on West El Camino Real while units and equipment were on the scene.

The affected resident elected to stay with local family members despite being allowed to return to their apartment. Traffic was reopened on West El Camino Real.

The fire was extinguished with no injuries. The fire cause was determined to be accidental due to storing combustible materials in an oven warming drawer. The estimated damage to the contents and structure is $5,000. The building was turned over to facilities maintenance for continued repairs to the apartment.
