Man dead in tragic fall from parking structure

Post Date:08/26/2022

A man has tragically died after an hours long effort to retrieve him from a parking structure ledge near El Camino Hospital.

Around 11 am on Friday, August 26, MVPD dispatchers received calls of a man in crisis on the fifth floor of a parking structure on North Drive. Officers immediately responded to the area, including specially trained Crisis Intervention officers. For several hours, teams worked to have the man, who we are not identifying at this time, come down safely from the ledge.

On scene throughout the incident were our Crisis Intervention-trained Officers, our Crisis Negotiations Team, and our Behavioral Services Unit. Also on scene were Mountain View Fire Department personnel and Santa Clara County paramedics.

Unfortunately, despite every effort to have him come down, the man ultimately attempted to climb over the railing of the structure and fell. Extensive life-saving efforts were made to revive him, but he was pronounced deceased.

Our officers are devastated.

“This is an incredibly tragic situation, and I know our team is greatly impacted by today,” said Chief Chris Hsiung. “My thoughts are with the man’s family.”

If you or someone you know is in crisis, a national hotline was established to help connect people to immediate care and services. 9-8-8 is available to anyone and can be used at anytime to help people in crisis. More resources can be found at https://bhsd.sccgov.org/home.
