Search warrant leads to discovery of methamphetamine in ongoing fraud case investigation

Post Date:08/24/2022

A man who had been arrested on suspicion of fraud will face additional charges after detectives, who served a search warrant on his apartment, found paraphernalia used in making methamphetamine on Wednesday.

On Aug. 24 around noon, Mountain View officers executed a search warrant at a residence on the 500 block of San Antonio Road as part of a follow-up investigation relating to a fraud case involving 37-year-old North Bay resident Kevin Johansen.

Kevin Johansen was arrested on Aug. 16 after he attempted to purchase a BMW multiple times from the Mountain View BMW dealership with a false Driver’s License with personal information from victims. He was never sold a car. Employees called MVPD to report the fraud and officers responded and detained Johansen at the dealership. During that investigation, officers found several victim credit cards and learned that Johansen had several warrants out of Marin County and other areas for similar crimes.

Johansen was subsequently arrested and following release from an area hospital for unrelated health treatments, he will be booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on charges of attempted car theft and the various warrants.

As part of our department’s follow-up investigation, officers requested a search warrant of an apartment they believed was connected to Johansen’s fraud case.

When officers executed the search warrant today (Aug. 24), they noticed when they entered the apartment that there was a lit Bunsen burner and an unknown substance. The apartment was immediately cleared and Mountain View Fire Department personnel were requested to assess if there was any hazardous material. Further investigation revealed the substance to be methamphetamine.

The search of the apartment is expected to last a few more hours. No one was injured and no other residents required evacuation.
