A reminder about road safety following collision involving MVPD patrol car

Post Date:04/01/2022 12:28 p.m.

Today, we are grateful that one of our own wasn’t seriously injured in a crash after he and his K9 were hit in their car late Friday night.

Around 11 pm on April 1, one of our officers on patrol with his K9 was traveling on California Street near Chiquita Avenue when a driver, who was under the influence, did not stop at a stop sign and broadsided our officer’s patrol car.

The officer was taken to an area hospital for treatment and he has since been released. The K9 was also evaluated for injuries and is alright.

We wanted to take a moment to remind our community that safety on the road is everyone’s responsibility. If you may be under the influence, please use alternate ways to get home safely.

You can book a ride share service to get you to your destination, or you can utilize public transit. You can also walk, or if you are at a friend or family’s home, stay for the night until you are able to get home.

The driver in this incident, who is 18, was cited for Driving While Under the Influence.

“I am very grateful that our officer and his K9 were able to make it home safely,” said Chief Chris Hsiung. “I am also glad no one was seriously injured. This could have been far worse, and this is a moment we can all reflect on to ensure we are doing everything we can as a community to keep each other safe.”
