On Sunday, Jan. 14 at 9:40 p.m., a 9-1-1 call was received reporting smoke and the smell of burning wood coming from the top of a vacant boarded-up building at 2320 W El Camino Real, previously occupied by the Off Ramp Bicycle shop.

City of Mountain View Fire Department units were dispatched at 9:40 p.m. and arrived on the scene at 9:45 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the second floor of the building and with people on the roof of the building. Firefighters laddered the building and attempted to evacuate the people from the roof, however, they self-evacuated and immediately left the scene before firefighters could interview them. Firefighters made entry and discovered a fire burning in the kitchen area of the building. Firefighters extinguished the fire and used thermal imaging cameras to ensure the spread of the fire had been stopped, and the fire had been completely extinguished. The Mountain View Police Department closed both directions of Ortega Avenue and the far-right lane of W El Camino Real while fire units and equipment were on the scene.

The fire was extinguished with no injuries to civilians or firefighters. The damage is estimated to be $1,500. The cause of the fire was determined to be an intentionally set warming fire left unattended in the interior of the building.

Traffic was reopened in both directions of Ortega Avenue and the W El Camino Real. Firefighters secured the building with wooden boards and reset the chain-link fence before leaving the scene.
