Commercial Business Fire at 2011 Stierlin Court

City of Mountain View Firefighters respond to a fire caused by a malfunctioning lithium-ion battery in a commercial building.

Post Date:01/22/2024 8:58 p.m.
On Monday, Jan. 22 at 11:37 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was received from a fire alarm company reporting a fire alarm in a commercial building at 2011 Stierlin Court. Approximately 25 employees self-evacuated before fire crews arrived on the scene.

City of Mountain View Fire Department units were dispatched at 11:37 a.m. and arrived on the scene at 11:43 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find a sprinkler head actively flowing water and smoke coming from a computer lab in a large, single-story office building. Firefighters stopped the flow of water from the sprinkler head and removed the charred remains of an office chair from the building.

Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to confirm the spread of the fire had been stopped. Fire crews used salvage operations techniques to remove water and smoke from the affected office space, without damaging sensitive electronic equipment.

The fire was extinguished with no injuries to civilians or firefighters. The damage is estimated to be $50,000. The cause of the fire was determined to be a malfunctioning lithium-ion battery in a cardboard box, placed in the seat of an office chair.

The building was turned over to management to make arrangements to restore the sprinkler and fire alarm systems.
