The idea for Teen Week stemmed from the developmental asset "Community Values Youth, whereas youth perceive that adults in the community value children and youth." Research shows that youth who feel valued in their community enjoy better mental health; a greater sense of personal control and optimism, reduced crime, violence and fighting; less substance abuse; and higher academic performance. Unfortunately, only 22% of teens in Silicon Valley reported feeling valued by their community. As part of Teen Week, there will be a series of teen-centric events such as Teen Open Mic Night, an Art Showcase, Expressive Activities and a City Council Proclamation.

Teens

• Support your fellow teens – show up, vocalize your support
• Challenge yourself – be proactive, ask questions, take a chance
• Get involved – join your school, city, or extracurricular leadership board.

Adults

• Ask your teen’s opinion about something in the news. Listen carefully, without interrupting. Discuss the topic (agreeing to disagree, if necessary)
• Serve on a community committee and seek out young people’s feedback about specific issues. Let them know you appreciate their presence and participation. Encourage civic groups to include young people in critical conversation.
• Celebrate and acknowledge the youth who contribute to your business, projects, etc.
• Finally, remember to treat all young people with respect, and take their ideas and suggestions seriously.
