The Recreation Division is responsible for issuing permits for a number of activities in the City of Mountain View. Below is a description of each permit with links and contact information.

Plaza Use Application

For information regarding use of City Plazas (Civic Center, Centennial, Charleston Park) and the Use Application, visit the link below or call (650) 903-6446.

Send completed applications to michele.petersen@mountainview.gov or 266 Escuela Avenue, Mountain View, CA 94040. Applications are due 60 days in advance of event date.

Special Event Application

Special Event permits are only awarded to nonprofit and civic organizations that provide service to residents of Mountain View. Special event applications and application fees are due 90 days prior to an event date.

Special Events Permit

Banner Application

The City of Mountain View permits the hanging of banners in three locations within the City:

  • El Camino Real @ Bay Street (near Grant Road)
  • Castro Street (currently suspended due to Castro StrEats Program)
  • El Camino Real @ Rengstorff Avenue Banner

Hanging Applications may be filed up to twelve (12) months, but no later than thirty (30) days prior to the scheduled event. The Banner Permit cost is $202.00.

Special Events Permit

Sound Amplification Permits

Sound Amplification applications must be submitted no later than 15 days prior to the scheduled event. Permits are not issued for private residences. Sound Amplification permits cost $25.00.

Special Events Permit

General Use Notification (GUN)

Groups of 50 or more wishing to use any City park (with the exception of BBQ reservations) need to apply for a General Use Notification.

Applications must be submitted at least two weeks prior to your event date, and require a five business day approval process (A $66 fee will be charged)

General Use Notifications are only available for Mountain View residents and businesses

BBQ/Picnic Reservations

Commercial Use of City Parks Use Permit

As outlined in City Council Policy H-8, commercial use permits are required for conducting outdoor professional services such as but not limited to personal fitness training, boot camps, and martial arts classes. Permits will only be issued for activities that will not disrupt the general public’s use and enjoyment of the park.

A complete Commercial Use Permit Application must be submitted by, including but not limited to, the instructor, teacher, activity leader or employing organization thereof to the City’s Community Services Department to be eligible for a permit. Applications, along with City of Mountain View business license and proof of insurance, as required by the City, must be submitted for each permit. Applications must be submitted at least 14 days prior to the requested start date.

Gym Rental Application

Applicants must submit all of the following in order to be considered for a rental permit:

  • Complete application form (see reverse); and
  • Proof of residency (preprinted check, driver’s license or current utility bill); or
  • Proof of Mountain View Business (submit current business license); and,
  • Submit a $500 deposit (fees accepted by applicant or business named on application only); and,
  • Submit a non-refundable $25.00 Application Fee

Due to high demand and limited availability, a lottery drawing will be held of all completed applications received by the deadline. Applicants will be notified by e-mail within 4-10 business days of the application deadline if a rental permit has been assigned with instructions in order to complete the permit process. If your application is selected in the lottery process, the deposit of $500 and $25 application fee will immediately be charged. Rental information and permit will follow soon after via e-mail. Applicants not assigned a rental permit after the initial lottery drawing will automatically be placed on a waitlist and contacted within 10-15 business days of application deadline. This application process does not guarantee a permit will be issued. Only one application per person or organization will be processed.

BBQ Reservations for Cuesta Park and Rengstorff Park

Barbecue reservations for Cuesta Park and Rengstorff Park are available April through October and are for Mountain View residents or businesses only. Reservations must be made at least three (3) business days in advance.

To reserve:

Reservations options include Large Group areas which accommodate up to 50 people per area and Family Tables which accommodate 8 people per table with a two table maximum. Large Group areas are $106 each and Family Tables are $15 each. Beer/Wine Permits are available for an additional $48 and only available with a reservation of a Large Group area.

Facility Reservation for Adobe Building, Community Center, or Senior Center

Reservations must be made at least ten (10) business days in advance prior to your desired reservation date. Review the Rental Application under Rental Documents and submit your application to recreservations@mountainview.gov or call the Reservations Office at (650) 903-6407.
