South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Pond Project at Pond A2W - Construction
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California State Coastal Conservancy will begin construction of the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Pond Project at Pond A2W located immediately north of Shoreline Park and west of Stevens Creek. Pond A2W will be restored from open-water ponds enclosed by levees to tidal marsh by allowing silt to settle in the pond so marsh plants can establish. For more information on the project, visit the project webpage.
Pond A2W Access Route and Material Import and Placement
Daily interruptions and brief closures of public access trail crossings (including a section of the Bay Trail) for delivery of material to Pond A2W will take place between 7:30 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. weekdays.
Truck traffic will enter the project area through the City of Mountain View’s Shoreline Park and into Pond A2W. Trucks will be traveling along Amphitheatre Parkway, onto Crittenden Lane, and then through the PG&E property adjacent to Stevens Creek into Shoreline Park on park maintenance levee-top roads. A new temporary access ramp will be built at the northeast limit of Shoreline Park, adjacent to the Bay Trail, for material transport to the project area in Pond A2W. Material will be used for construction access, habitat enhancements and levee fill. All trails will be accessible on weekdays when no hauling or construction is occurring. Temporary signs and flaggers will be placed at the Bay Trail and adjacent to Crittenden Pump Station to manage truck traffic and trail user access.
When: February 7, 2022, until December 31, 2023
This project will help the implementation of the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project’s Phase 2 action at the Alviso-Mountain View Ponds. It will establish an access route and stockpile location for deliveries by haul trucks of fill material for the project construction, including wildlife habitat slopes and islands and for improvements to existing levees.
If you have questions or comments, contact the City at (650) 903-6311.
Castro Street Closed at Central Expressway
Access to southbound Castro Street toward downtown from Central Expressway and Moffett Boulevard is now closed to vehicles. Detour messages are posted on Moffett Boulevard and Central Expressway routing traffic onto Shoreline Boulevard to access downtown. The closure will remain in effect until two weeks after the end of the City’s emergency declaration which is expected to occur sometime in 2021, for the Castro Summer StrEATs pilot.
This closure is a safety measure to prevent vehicles queuing up onto the Caltrain railroad tracks. The bicycle and pedestrian crossings of Central Expressway and Caltrain tracks will remain open for bicycle and pedestrian access to downtown and the Transit Center. Outbound traffic on northbound Castro Street to Central Expressway will remain open.
