The City of Mountain View is committed to supplying high quality drinking water and providing a safe and reliable supply to our customers.

Water Quality Regulations

Drinking water originates from many sources including rivers, lakes, reservoirs and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up other substances which result from the presence of animal or human activities. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and State Water Resources Control Board (Water Board) regulations limit contaminant levels for drinking water supplied by public systems. The EPA and Water Board also regulate water quality monitoring practices and reporting.

Water Sampling Program

Each year, the City and its suppliers perform thousands of tests to analyze water samples for over 150 water constituents to ensure the drinking water you receive meets the standards set by the EPA and Water Board.

• City personnel collect water samples each week from dedicated sampling stations throughout the water distribution system. A private, state-certified laboratory analyzes the samples.
• Mountain View’s water system operators monitor chlorine and pH levels daily.
• The Santa Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD) and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), Mountain View’s water wholesale suppliers, perform their own water quality analyses of the source and treated water.

The City of Mountain View publishes the results of these tests in an annual Consumer Confidence / Water Quality Report distributed to the public and other periodic publications.
